From Santa Barbara to Kämpinge – A Journey on a Surfboard

Rikard’s passion for wave surfing was sparked far from the Swedish coastline while studying at university in Santa Barbara, California. He recalls that he got into the sport late, but quickly became hooked.

After traveling the world and stepping away from surfing for a few years, a trip to Japan reignited his interest. A typhoon prevented him from returning home, giving him time to rediscover his love for the waves. Shortly after, he spent a month in Australia, where he “lived on the beach and surfed from dawn to dusk.”

“When I commit to something, I go all in,” Rikard says with a smile.

A Vision of a Hub for Everyone

When Rikard and his family moved to Kämpinge four years ago, they quickly discovered that they had landed in a surfer’s paradise. The club was just a hundred meters away, and for Rikard, it felt like a dream.

It didn’t take long before he became a member, and two years later, he was asked to take over as chairman. He accepted without hesitation, bringing with him a clear vision:

– I want to bring the community together, for everyone with an interest in watersports and beach life, says Rikard.
– A hub for everyone. Whether you love watersports or just want to enjoy good company.

Renovation and Growth Despite Setbacks

Storm Babet completely destroyed the club’s facilities in October 2023, but that hasn’t stopped its progress. Members have been actively involved in restoring the club, and while there is still a lot of work ahead, Rikard remains optimistic about the future.

– There’s still a lot left to renovate, but it’s going to look amazing. I’m really looking forward to the result – but not the renovation itself, he says with a laugh.

Over the past two years, membership has nearly doubled to over 400, allowing the club to introduce more activities and social events.

– We’ve gained a number of local sponsors who are helping us move forward. We’re very grateful for that, Rikard adds.

Activities for Everyone – From Beginners to Veterans

Kämpinge Watersports Club offers a wide range of water sports, including stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), kayaking, windsurfing, water skiing, and wakeboarding. For younger members, the club arranges fun activities like rides on inflatable tubes and a rubber banana boat pulled behind a motorboat. Recently, the club has also introduced wing foiling, a relatively new and rapidly growing sport.

– We have activities for all ages and experience levels. It doesn’t matter if you’re a beginner or an experienced athlete – there’s something for everyone, says Rikard.

In addition to water sports, social activities are a key part of the club’s community. During the summer months, barbecue nights are held every Thursday, often combined with activities and small competitions.

– You don’t have to participate in water sports yourself. You can join just for the social aspect, Rikard adds.

The Future of Kämpinge Watersports Club

Even though renovations are in full swing during the winter, plans for the next season are already well underway. One of the major highlights is the surf camp for kids.

– We’re looking forward to our annual surf camp for kids – it’s usually fully booked and a real highlight for them, says Rikard.

Relationship with Gul?

As we wrap up the interview, I ask about his connection to Gul Watches –

– I had one when I was a kid and have missed it ever since, he says with a laugh. Favorite? The yellow models with velcro straps!
